The source of this document is the Early English Books Online (EEBO-TCP) website. Those books were transcribed in a character for character manner and can be very cumbersome to read since there was no standard spelling during that time. Many spelling variations such as "unlesse", "vnlesse", and "vnles" regularly appear.

This project was conceived to clean up those books as much as possible and make them more accessible to the interested reader, leading to the creation of a massive list of variant spellings and their corrections. This was used to clean up the text, but is of course only as complete as the list itself. Because of the nature of the original transcription, some words have missing characters or places where the original language (e.g., Greek) was not transcribed. This effort does not change that. Be aware that the original transcription can also be faulty and in some cases entire sentences may be missing.

Although this is no substitute for a properly compared, proofed, and scholarly edition, I believe that the result is a document which is far more accessible, particularly for searching for terms using standard spelling. The document has been cleaned and presented in what I hope is a pleasing and useful format for the vast majority of Christian brothers and sisters who just want access to read these spiritually nourishing works.

However, a word of warning: The Puritans were a very diverse group of people and their age was characterized with godliness, but also much upheaval, disputation and strife. They disagreed on many doctrines and some of these works contain less orthodox or Scriptural views than others. The reader is strongly advised to read with discernment, particularly if it is unknown whether author is trustworthy.

This project took a huge amount of time and skill to bring to fruition. I would particularly like to thank David Jonescue for the initial list of Puritans he found on EEBO and the concept behind this project as well as the continuous, unceasing efforts toward seeing this complete. Without his labor, this would not be available. Alex Sarrouf was invaluable in providing the initial list of over 7,000 spelling variations he had identified and corrected, as well as continuing to review more than 16,000 additions to that list for any typos.

A defense of the holy Genealogies: whose ignorance hath greatly hurt the Jews, and hindered Christianity.

I Have thought good for the Readers benefit, to add unto your pains in the Genealogies of Scripture, some instruction for the use of them. And first, I hope all godly will grant, that none which are contained therein may be supposed foolysh or unprofitable, seeing that the gracious spirit of wisdom is author of them. For all that are in the old Testament, the Jews acknowledge the wisdom of God so far, that if any should say Man wrought them of human wisdom, they condemn him as Godles. And that no less this hath God's authority. The sons of Cham were Cush, and Mizraim: then these words: Hear Israel, Jehovah our God, Jehovah is one. And Christians must think no less of such as be in the New Testament. Uses of them be many: and this a principal, that without dexterity herein we may soon be brought to deny our Savior, by mistaking his family. What harm hath Lyra wrought▪ who would not have Nathan son to David, but to Uriah? So our Lord should come, not of Sem and David, but▪ of Cham. Yet herein he hath been followed in our notes: whereof some be revoked, & some yet abide unchanged. Our country man Lyra, corrupted by study of malicious Rabbin's, and kindlyng sparks of saythles Jews, which look for a pompous kingdom of Solomon's family, and hold it a denial of God, to deny that to Solomon's family, could not conceive that Christ should come of David by an obscure line, whereof never any ruled but Zerubbabel, and he no longer then to build the Temple. This Lyra long deceived us therein: as likewise touching Jeconiah, in what sense he should beget Salathiel: whether as Paul begat Onesimus, a successor in his kind for so much: and as Baasa had Ahab his son, as the common phrase of kings goeth, and likewise as Jeconiah begat his uncle Zedekias: or in the natural sort. Lyra thought him a natural father, fearing that article of the Jews which is extant in the Talmud San. from Ramban, article 12. which standeth in these terms. There is no king but of David's house, and of Solomon's family: and who so maketh a schism touching that family, denieth God, even the blessed God, and the words of his Prophets. If this should be granted them, our Religion were false, who stay upon S. Luke, that bringeth our Lord from Nathan's line. Moreover the oath of God touching Jeconiah, that though he were a signet upon God's hand, he should be plucked thence & cast off: if Zerubbabel made again God's signet came of him, that oth of God should be falsified: which thing to think of, is most horrible For God never altered anything pronounced by an oth. Herin the Jews dally extremely, despising S. Luke's direction: who would have taught them that Salathiel came of Neri, and he of Melchi: whose very bare names show, that a new family looked for the kingdom to come to it, no less then Zachari bringeth Zerubbabel to Nathan, naming his family as chief under David. Also as the Prophet was called Nathan, who told David from God, of Christ to arise of his loins: So David gave no small warning in naming the child Nathan, which was next brother to Solomon, that of him Christ should be. The Jews frowardness herein is deadly, and causeth their millions to withdraw them selves from Christianity: of which sin we are also gylty, who thrust them forward, grauntyng their doctrine therein true, touching Jeconiah and Salathiel: and in Achizia ending the house of Solomon. Here observe from John Lucidus how in Papistry, they had small care of the truth in this point: and against it take the true Genealogy: now that the Reader may have benefit of his words, which in some points are good, I have expressed them as they lie.

The words of John Ludidus.

    • Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was borne Christ.

Luke therefore prosecuteth all the generations which proceed naturally, directly according to the line of Nathan. And began at the Father of Mary the virgen, who is called Eli, or Ioachin: because he was named with a double name. For Rabbi Haccanes the Hebrew, in his answer to the third request of Antonius a Consul of Rome affyrmeth: That be received by revelation from Elias, that the Parent of the mother of the Messias had a double name: the one Eli, the other Ioachin. And afterward Rabbi Haccanas saith. There was a certain Mayde in Bethlehem of Judah, whose name was Mary, the daughter of Ioachin Eli, of the kindred of Zerubbabel the son of Salathiel, of the tribe of Judah. Thus much he saith. Mary therefore was the natural daughter of Eli or Ioachin: But Joseph the husband of Mary was the son in law of the same Ioachin, and by consequent was his lawful son by affinity. For as Mary was in the first degree of consanguinity to her father: so was Joseph in the first degree of affinity to his father in law, seeing there was true matrimony between Joseph and Mary. Therefore S. Luke saith, That Christ was thought to be the son of Joseph, which was the son of Eli. That is to say, his son in law, and in the place of Mary he putteth her husband, according to the custom of the Scriptures. But S. Matthew describeth first the generations according to the line of Solomon the king, until there was none left of his race: the which kynred faylyng, he is afterward compelled to digress into the line of Nathan: because of him were borne the successors of the kingdom, as we said before in the 9. chapiter of our seconde Book. And S. Matthew agreeth with S. Luke unto Zerubbabel. But because Zerubbabel, who was also called Barachias, the son of Salathiel, begat two sons, that is to say, Rhesa who was called Meshullam, and Abiud who was called Ananias. Therefore S. Luke prosecuteth the line of Nathan by his son Rhesa, unto the father of Mary the virgen: and S. Matthew prosecuteth the same line by his son Abiud unto the father of Joseph the husband of Mary. Therefore both of them were borne of the seed of David by the line of Nathan: but Mary is borne by the one branch, that is to say, by Rhesa and Joseph by the other branch: that is to say, by Abiud. Philo the Hebrew showeth us these things: and John Annius in his Commentaries upon the abbreuiaries of the same Philo declareth them plentifully. Petrus Galatinus also describeth this Genealogy in his seventh Book and twelfe chapter against the Hebrews. But in this he erreth, That he against the truth, thought that there were two Salathiels, and two Zerubbabel's: the which he proveth not. But he may easily be confuted by this: in that the line of Solomon ended in the seventh generation: and in his Genealogy there is no Salathiel nor Zerubbabel found. Neither could Joseph descend from Solomon, because his race was cut off many years before. But he sprang from the line of Nathan by the same Abiud, as Mary sprang from the same line of Nathan by Rhesa, as we have said. Salathiel therefore, which is called the son of Ieconias by S Matthew, is the same Salathiel which is called the son of Neri by S. Luke, because Ieconias, Neri, and Ioachin Eli, are the same men, as Philo witnesseth. For Ieconias who is also surnamed Neri, begat Salathiel in Captivity, of whom Zerubbabel was borne: who was the Captayne of the people after their delyuery, that is, after the 70. years desolation of the Temple. When S. Matthew therefore saith, And after the carrying away into Babylon, Ieconias begat Salathiel. It is not to be understood, that he begat him after the Captivity, but after the carrying away in the time of the Captivity. For Galatinus urgeth by argument, saying. That there were more generations according to S. Luke, and fewer according to S. Matthew: because descending from Rhesa they begat sooner: And those that were begotten of Abiud, progenerated more slowly: therefore they were more, and these the fewer in number. Augustine in his 16. Book of the City of God and 11. chapter setteth down this reason touching other generations, saying. Thus, not because Heber was the sixth from Noah, and Nimrod the fourth: therefore they could not live at the same time. For this falleth out, that seeing they live longer, where there are fewer generations: and less time, where there be more descentes: that either they were borne later where there were fewer, or sooner where there were more. If Peter Galatinus had fully read the whole observation of Philo, and the Comentarie of Johannes Annius upon the same, without question he would not have fallen into this error: But Galatinus declareth the rest aright, which pertain to this Genealogy. There is therefore no disagreement found between S. Matthew and S. Luke, but either of them hath described aright the true Genealogy of CHRIST. Thus far speaketh John Lucidus, extremely deceived by a forged Philo▪ whom with a like Berosus, and Metasthenes all faygned in Italy of late days. M. Joseph Scaliger damneth, not more vehemently then justly, and sharply reproveth them, who in their great light of learning that now shyneth in the world, stain their labors, otherwise good, with such authors. Thus sick Romistes and others are: but Jews monstrously.

I will show a cure for both: But first mark the Jews sickness in Gemara. They say in Tal. Saned. Pa. 37. b. That captivity was an expiation for all sins. And prove that by Jeconiah, whose son Salathiel is called, after that God bade all the earth to write him chyldles. But Zedekias case and Zachari might have taught them to understand sonnage in another sense. And seeing S. Luke prevented their error: they should not bring an instance from the matter in controversy. Moreover, it is manifest that captivity purgeth not sin, by them who with Zedekias were captived, who were as bad Figs. Therefore they are grossly deceived. Rambam in his treatise of repentance showing how it maketh men far from God, to be near him, bringeth Jeconiah for an example: who (saith he) was a signet to be plucked off: and in Zerubbabel is a signet again. This Rabbi called of Jews a great Eagle, is blind of the two eyes, because he taketh it as granted, that Jeconiah naturally begat Salathiel. For Sedar Olam zuta warned him of this point, that it was in deed the Rabbin's report, as having no further authority. Also in that touching repentance, he is doubly deceived: For if Jeconiah repentance had been so singular, he had not been kept so long in Prison 37. years, all Nabuchadnezers life time. In that age God usually gave open blessings in kings affairs. Moreover even Moses repentance and prayer to enter Canaan, could not prevail against the oth of God. So if he had been Job, Noah, or Daniel, he could but save his soul, the decreed punishment he could not avoid. The blindness of the late Jews may herein appear. Ibn Ezra must also be dealt with, who upon the Cant. saith, that Christ is called Solomon, because he cometh of him. Can the most holy, whose works were known of eternity, come of families most ungracious, as of Joram who kilde his own brethren, of Achazias Ahab's lynage, of Joash that kilde Zacharias, of Amazia that worshipped Edom God's, of Achaz worse then he, of Joakim whom Rambam reckoneth amongst them that sinned against the holy Ghost? A kingdom of justice would not be derived from such a race. This might move them to rest in plain Scripture, to ende Solomon's race in Jeconiah. And herein also I have answered our forged Philo, who would ende Solomon's house in Ochosias. But to that I will add this much: that God prevented it by six Scripture, wherein Joash is termed son to Achazia. Besides no native Jew ever dreamed of such a quirke, as to ende Solomon's house so obscurely. Moreover▪ Joash age, and the place of his bringing up, and the Gentlwoman that saved him, all plainly argue his kindred. Ouer and besides, it passed the wit of Athaliah to find out all Nathan's house so far. Neither doth God record families to be destroyde, but upon mention of impiety: for which none of Nathan's house is anywhere blamed. Wherefore this feigned Philo so grossly deceyuing us, might make us better regard skill in principal families: where unskillfulness hath heen the ruin of Christianity.

An other great error in the deriving of the kingdom from Zerubbabel's house is like unto this, For by Abiud unto Joseph it should be brought: which Line principally is called The Saints of the most high (Trinity) Dan. 7. from whom the four beasts take the kingdom, though they shall possess the kingdom eternal. Some forged Rhesabs house to rule: and many follow that: as though Mary could have been heir to a kingdom in Judah. And if she might, why would S. Matthew omit her Lyne in showing the right of the kingdom, and come to Joseph's house: whose right must needs belong to Christ his son by law and man's estimation.

A direction to find all those names expressed in that large Table of Genealogies of Scripture, lately gathered by I. S. Whereof the first number serveth for the side margentes, and the later answerable to the highest Fygures.
